Last Monday, 26th February 2018, took place a new match of La Liga Seniors, this time Los Arqueros vs La Cañada.
When we defeated La Cañada last season they were not best pleased and they came back this year determined to do better. And they succeeded! It takes some doing to beat us at Los Arqueros because of the difficulty of the course and our tricky greens but, they played exceptionally well, and deserved their win.
In the first match Mike and I quickly gained the upper hand despite giving 25 shots to our opponents and we were three up at the turn, and stayed ahead until the 15th, and eventually won 4&3.
Dean and Fran played well but they faced two players playing at the top of their game with the ten handicapper only dropping one shot and, inevitably, Fran and a Dean lost 4&3. In the deciding match Markus and Guy struggled as well against a string of birdies and pars and, although they fought back well, they ran out of holes and lost 2 down.
It is the first Home defeat since I took over as Captain, and hopefully the last, but it indicates just how difficult it is going to be this season to repeat last year’s success. The return match is on Thursday, weather permitting, and hopefully we can redeem ourselves.
