La Liga Seniors: La Cañada vs Los Arqueros

La Liga Seniors: La Cañada vs Los Arqueros

Last Wednesday, 25th April 2018, took place a new match of La Liga Seniors, this time La Cañada vs Los Arqueros.

This match was rearranged three times due to bad weather and despite a very adverse forecast it was played in calm, overcast conditions with little or no wind. In the earlier match we lost at home for the first time in two seasons with La Canada winning 2-1 and consequently we arrived at their course determined to avenge that result.

In the first match Mike and Steve had to play at the top of their game to hold off the number one pair especially giving them eleven shots and, after the match swung one way and then the other, Mike used his shots to good advantage in the last five holes to gain a crucial lead and eventually we won 2&1. It was especially appropriate for Mike to hit the winning putt on the 17th hole after he had a bad experience there last year.

The other two matches were equally close. In Dean and Fran’s match the lead changed hands several times but our pair were behind most of the time and it took a four foot clutch putt by Dean on the last green to secure the half. Markus and Alan showed admirable composure after going three down after nine holes to fight back to finish All Square with Alan holing a great putt for a birdie on the 17th and Markus holing out from five foot on the last green.

It was a great result and meant that the overall score was 3-3 and that we still haven’t lost a two leg La Liga match since 2015. Hopefully it will give us the impetus to gain a similar result against Baviera next week as they have a very strong team.

The results were (Los Arqueros won 2-1):

– Mike Jordan / Steve Bailey won 2&1

– Dean Cox / Fran Whelan halved (All Square)

– Markus Ruulio / Alan Vowls halved (All Square)

Steve Bailey,

The Captain
