Plant a tree at Los Arqueros Golf!

Plant a tree at Los Arqueros Golf!

Continuing our commitment to the environment, one of our goals this year is to increase the density of trees in our course. The best way is to choose native species of the area to make sure that they can resist the weather and avoid endangering the ecosystem. The Greenkeeper, Jose Antonio Garcia, has chosen several species to ensure biodiversity: wild olive tree, holm oak, cork tree and carob.

Wild olive tree

The wild olive tree is part of the set of bushes and trees of Mediterranean forest together with holm oak, gall oak and cork tree. The wild olive tree adapts to all soil types and tolerate perfectly the heat, however it is very sensitive to cold, especially frost. It produces small olives which are attractive to birds in autumn when they need an extra reserve of fat for the winter or undertake long migratory journeys. Today, it is again used for the production of oil, like an ecological premium product.

Holm oak

It is a characteristic tree of the Mediterranean region, highly resistant to extreme heat and cold. It is the most characteristic Spanish tree. Today it is present in all provinces except in the Canary Islands. It is the queen of Mediterranean vegetation in mountain area. Its fruit is the acorn, which comes in autumn, much appreciated to feed Iberian pigs, hence the vital importance for the economy and the Spanish cuisine. In November matures and falls down.

Cork tree

It is a characteristic tree of the Mediterranean area, covered by a thick crust, which produces cork. Its size is medium or large, can reach 25 meters. It closely resembles the holm oak, but it is easily distinguished by its very thick and fluffy crust which is known like cork.

Carob

Carob is a kind of high elasticity and resistance to drought, but it has a slow development, and only begins to bear fruit after about seven to ten years from planting, obtaining its full productivity after fifteen or twenty years. Usually it has a good production every two years, ranging between 90 and 200 kg of fruit in mature trees. The recollection is made from August, through “vareo” or directly from the ground.

The member who wants to plant one of these native trees can choose from these species and pay the amount of €35 to be invested in the purchase of tree planting and placing a sign with his name and date. The planned date for planting would be the end of January so that all stakeholders must have their tree booked before that date.
