Honorary Captain of Los Arqueros Golf

Honorary Captain of Los Arqueros Golf

Capitan Honorifico Arqueros Golf

On last Thursday, the Club decided to appoint Mr. Agustín García Agüera “Honorary Captain” of Los Arqueros Golf for his achievement, dedication and commitment to the Golf in Andalucia and especially for our Club Los Arqueros Golf. The ceremony was joined by the Andalusian Golf Federation with the presence of its President, Mr. Angel de la Riva, and its CEO and General Secretary, Mr. Miguel Navarro Alvarez.

Agustin was our Captain in Los Arqueros from 1995 until 2011, becoming President of the Competition Committee to make way for other Members to be Captains in the last 3 years. A total of 19 years on the ball to ensure the activities of the Club competitions and its relations with the Andalusian and Spanish Golf Federation, made in the years much of this work alone. Fitting perfectly in the idiosyncrasies of this multicultural Club by being Spanish, for his many years of residence in England and married to a British. An important task for which the Club will be eternally grateful.

Before Los Arqueros he was also Captain for nearly 20 years in the mystical and secret golf course Rota Naval Base. Specifically, between 1975 and 1995. Where for his status as an employee of the Naval Base (EA7, equivalent to Lieutenant Commander degree), was the first Spanish to play this course. A golf course that was founded in 1953 when the Americans built their military naval base which came to exceed 15,000 Americans.

All this changes a lot with the establishment of Democracy in Spain with a new bilateral agreement where the Spanish Marine Corps takes over control the security of the Base and here Agustin  becomes an employee of the Spanish Ministry of Defence . And here was also born Rota Social Golf Club, of which Agustin was Capitan. Few Spaniards at that time were playing Golf around this area, where most of those few were from the Club Vista Hermosa. It was at this time that Agustin began organizing Pro-AMs in this Club. Very succulent for the Andalusians professionals by the time that was paid 30,000 pesetas each per event. And many passed through here, like Miguel Angel Jimenez, Andres Jimenez, Miguel Angel Martin, the brothers Quiros, Juan Rosa, Tomas and Ricardo Bellido, etc …., hence the well known and can tell many interesting stories of these professionals in their carrier beginning.

Agustin Garcia was also one of the founders of the Andalusian League in his time in Los Arqueros. This has the Andalusian Golf Federation president reminded me several times, also highlighting his important promotion work that has gone into Los Arqueros Golf in relation to this. He also did something similar in the Rota Naval Base in the early years organizing golf tournaments for Americans outside their Base on golf courses in Cadiz and Malaga. No doubt his name is linked to the promotion of Golf in Andalucia.

For me to say, Agustin has been a school, a great colleague and a good friend. And I know that this honor is to make something very right.

Regards,

Golf Manager of Los Arqueros
